Why is strategy so important?

Strategy is the unique set of attributes and activities that an entire organization uses to reach its goal.

Three things bear repeating. First, a strategy is unique. No two organizations can have the same strategy. There must be differentiation.

Second, the word “goal” is singular. A singular goal forces an organization to align the entirety of its resources around one common effort thereby maximizing its chances for success.

Third, in order to work, strategy must be meaningful to every person in the organization. Each person must understand the strategy and understand how their day-to-day efforts help the organization reach its goal.

Most organizations find that it’s hard, really hard, to craft a useful strategy. So hard, in fact, that most of them don’t do it.

And to make matters worse, most organizations find that it’s even harder to implement strategy.

So why do it?

Because despite the difficulties, creating and implementing a strategy is possible and will provide your firm with the focus necessary to improve your fortunes.

And those who get it right simply out-perform their rivals.

The fact is, creating and executing strategy is what makes business fun. When everyone in the organization is aligned and working together, that’s fun. And when the whole team reaches its goal, well, there’s nothing more fun than that!
